Music is how I make sense of my deep feelings and my inner world.
It's the only way I know how. It always has been.
As a young girl I would sit down to write and it would come out in rhyme. I didn't choose music exactly, it just kept choosing me, in the quietest, most persistent way.
There are songs I've written where something in me knew, even while I was still writing them, that I was touching something. Not because I was confident. I wasn't. But there was a feeling in the room, a stillness, like the song already existed somewhere and I was just the one finding it.
"Little Girl" was one of those. When Spike Lee called, my first thought wasn't celebration. It was something closer to waiting for him to change his mind. I didn't let myself get too excited. I half believed it was a cosmic mistake. Even with the call in my hand I kept one foot out of the moment, just in case.
That gap, between knowing something is alive and actually letting yourself receive it, is something I've spent a long time learning to close. In 2017 that song was selected from thousands of submissions and placed on the Netflix series She's Gotta Have It. I'm still learning how to just say that without shrinking it.
If you've ever felt something real and talked yourself out of it before anyone else had the chance to confirm it, you'll find yourself somewhere in here.

A note on the music
Most of what you'll find here is written and performed entirely by me. Two tracks, "I'm Feeling Sad," a children's song, and "For Danny," written for my brother after his passing, were released with AI performance. Having the tools to get a song out into the world on my own terms, without waiting for the perfect moment or the right mood or the right anything, is something I'm genuinely grateful for.
My relationship with my music is still evolving, as I am, through motherhood, through grief, through a life that is mysterious and beautiful and sometimes incredibly hard. There is so much more I want to express and put out into the world. I'm excited for what's coming. More music is on its way.
